Climatic Impacts on Railroad Infrastructure

To better understand how climate change is anticipated to affect railroad track infrastructure resiliency, MxV Rail performed a high-level literature review with an emphasis on flooding. The literature review, supported by the Association of American Railroads (AAR) Strategic Research Initiative (SRI) program, had two main objectives. The first objective was to gain a high-level understanding for how forecasted climate change is anticipated to affect railroad infrastructure, including how different aspects of climate (e.g., precipitation, heat) will impact railroad infrastructure and geographic differences in climate change projections. A second objective was to 1) provide a forecast of innovative tools and technologies that will help identify risk and provide alerts for conditions that may cause track to be out-of-service, and 2) indicate how these tools could be incorporated into current localized design and risk analyses.  Climatic impacts from flooding, landslides, washouts, heatwaves, ice, etc., have been an ongoing challenge for North American…
