Steel Deck Girder Bridge Fatigue Testing at FAST®

MxV Rail conducted fatigue and fitness-for-service testing on five riveted steel deck plate girders (DPGs) at the Facility for Accelerated Service Testing (FAST®). The results to date have contributed to significant improvements in fitness-for-service life estimation for steel spans. Many of these improvements have recently been incorporated into Chapter 15 (Steel Structures) of the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) Manual for Railway Engineering.? Improvements include the use of reduced impact values for fatigue assessments, as well as a stress-range reduction factor to account for deck contributions and other effects. This Technology Digest summarizes the fatigue testing performed on those spans before their removal from the FAST track. BACKGROUND Table 1 summarizes the riveted steel DPG spans tested on a 2.7-mile loop and lists these spans in chronological order of installation.
