MxV Rail has been evaluating eddy current testing (ET), a nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technology used to detect anomalies and verify repairs associated with the bearing reconditioning process since 2022. The validation of NDE technology is essential to ensure its accuracy, repeatability, reliability, and applicability in detecting material defects or anomalies. Proper validation is foundational to safety, compliance, and operational efficiency. Bearing cups with and without a spall repair were considered for the ET validation study. All samples were initially inspected and repaired by a reconditioning facility according to the Association of American Railroads’ (AAR) standards and guidelines.1 MxV Rail engineers then used flexible eddy current array (ECA) technology to inspect these bearing cups and determine whether any surface and subsurface damage in the raceway were detectable after the visual inspection and repair process.
