MxV Rail has been testing open deck bridge materials as part of the Association of American Railroads’ (AAR) Strategic Research Initiatives (SRI) program. Since 2009, alternative material bridge ties intended to perform better and last longer than traditional timber ties have been evaluated for long-term performance under heavy axle load (HAL) traffic at the Facility for Accelerated Service Testing (FAST®)* in Pueblo, CO. Deck hold-down fasteners that require less effort to install have also been evaluated as part of this ongoing test. This Technology Digest provides an update on this testing.
