On-Board Broken Rail Detection System (OBRDS) Evaluation

Since 2022, MxV Rail has been evaluating alternative broken rail detection systems (ABRDS) under the Association of American Railroads (AAR) Strategic Research Initiatives rail inspection technology project.1 MxV Rail engineers tested and evaluated the performance of the Siemens Mobility Pty Ltd. (Siemens) on-board broken rail detection system (OBRDS) technology at the Facility for Accelerated Service Testing (FAST®*). This Technology Digest summarizes the testing and performance of the OBRDS technology at FAST during the 2025 spring and fall operations. OBRDS train-mounted magnetic sensors scan both rails of the track for broken rails in real time and provide precise break locations using the Global Positioning System (GPS). The OBRDS technology offers several advantages over MxV Rail’s in-house rail break detection system, which functions similarly to conventional track circuits. However, these benefits are contingent upon prior track mapping of the specific network designated for inspection. Furthermore, maintenance of the required rail sensor height…
